Pays Basque
Nov. 17th, 2011 10:43 pmActually we were going to Biarritz, but finally found ourselves in St-Jean-de-Luz.It is a famous resort on the Basque coast on the Bay of Biscay, just a few km from Spain. It is protected from the savagery of the Atlantic ocean. I was on the 'other' side of Atlantic -)).
The weather was bad, it was raining heavily all day long, but even under the grey, heavy, crying sky St-Jean-de-Luz looked gorgeous and sooo peaceful and beautiful.
So as i mentioned, the weather was fine:
1.
The sun was shining:
2.
The beach was crowded: (This is sarcasm, Sheldon (c))
3.
4.
5.
My friend and her children refused to leave the car.Cowards. So it was a car trip round the town. The only crazy person devoted photographer was me. I shouted 'Stop here!' every 5 min, grabbed my umbrella and ran out of the car to take photos. Although I tried to protect the camera you'll see some rain drops here and there:

Each residence has its own name. I suspect this one is in Basque, not sure:
8.
The doors were wide open:
9.
or closed and the house was hidden behind old trees. The trees securely keep scary secrets.:
10.
11.
Red roofs:
12.
I assume this is an old tradition to double letters:
13.
14.
People do not save on houses here:
15.
16.
This one impressed me:
17.
18.
I love details, like these things under the roof (I have no idea how to call them) and see how tender the tree leaves are:
19.
20.
21.
Pyrenees are a natural border between France and Spain. Spain is just behind the mountains:
22.
Now we are leaving St-Jean-de-Luz and are going to the eco-museum of Basque country:
23.
We were shown how they do Izarra sweet liqueur. And we tasted it. There are Yellow Izarra (made with 32 herbs) and Green Izarra (made with 48 herbs):
25.
In sum there are three most famous things (not counting Izarra). 1. Basque pelota court sports played against the wall:
26.
2. Espadrille shoes, originated from the Pyrenees, upper made from cotton or canvas fabric and sole made of rope (not shown) 3. Basque-style beret (red, black or green) made of hand-knitted sheep wool:
27.
Ah, yes, the 4th thing - one of the most beautiful public restrooms:
28.
29.
On our way back we got into heavy traffic and I took picture of: an old plane tree (platanus sp.)
30.
A Basque symbol on the wall (to the right):
31.
The traffic itself:
32.
and (I don't know why) three bored track drivers (Freud's unconscious??):
33.
34.
